First-Years Kick Off the Spring Semester

To kick off the Spring 2025 semester, the Office of the First Year (OFY) hosted two events to welcome first-year students back to campus following the Independent Activities Period (IAP).

On Saturday, February 1, students participated in the First Year inFormation Fair (F3). F3 is a “mini conference” intended to help students begin academic and professional goal-setting as they prepare for their future at MIT. During the event, students had the opportunity to attend two out of the four workshops that were offered. These included:

  • Career Exploration and Preparedness with Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD)
  • All About Majors with Associate Advisors
  • “Am I Doing College Right?” with the UAC
  • Experiential Learning Opportunities with UROP, PKG, and the Edgerton Center

After a couple rounds of workshops, students ended their morning with an inspiring keynote from Professor Laurie Boyer. Professor Boyer is a Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering at MIT. During her presentation, she advised students to take full advantage of being at MIT, surrounded by incredible peers and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. She encouraged students to be curious and to try new things, both academically and in extracurricular activities.

After a full day of reflection and learning, first year students were invited to end their weekend with a fun trip to the Museum of Science! On Sunday, February 2, students were shuttled to and from the museum to explore the exhibits and enjoy a full spread of delicious appetizers and desserts.

With the entire museum closed down for the night, students had the opportunity to roam both the Blue and the Green wings. They participated in a scavenger hunt that was put together by the OFY team, which got students excitedly exploring all floors of the museum. Congratulations to the winners who got to choose from an assortment of prizes, all purchased from the official museum store.
