Registration Information

Details on pre-registration and registration for each term follows below.

Independent Activities Period (IAP) 2024

Pre-registration for IAP 2024 opens on Friday, December 1 and closes at 5 PM on Monday, January 8. Details for the IAP registration process are outlined on the Registrar’s site.

Independent Activities Period (IAP) is a great time to explore various non-credit IAP activities or UROP, register for classes for credit, or take time for yourself to recharge and have fun. You are automatically registered for IAP subjects based on pre-registration without your advisor’s approval, although we strongly encourage you to still meet with them to discuss your plans. Here as some things you should know about IAP:

  • You may not take more than 12 units during IAP.
    • If your subject begins in the fall and extends into IAP (e.g. 8.01L and 18.02A), or if your subject begins in IAP and extends into the spring, six units will be applied to your IAP credit limit.
    • A UROP taken for credit counts towards your IAP credit limit.
  • First-year students:
    • IAP continues to be graded on P/NR for first-year students.
    • ASEs taken in IAP do not count toward the 12-unit credit limit.
  • You may modify subject selections until pre-registration closes at 5pm on Monday, January 8. After that, use the Add/Drop Application to make changes. IAP subjects have varied start and end dates and there is no single Add or Drop Date.
  • Payment of full tuition in the fall or spring terms also covers subjects taken for academic credit during IAP. Students who are not charged full tuition should contact us before registering.
  • Special students should consult the MIT Bulletin for information on eligibility.
  • Cross-registration is not available during IAP.

Spring 2024

Pre-registration for the Spring 2024 semester opens on Friday, December 1 and closes at 5 PM on Monday, January 8. Details for the pre-registration process are outlined on the Registrar’s site.

  • Pre-registration is an opportunity for you to plan your class schedule for the upcoming term and prepare to meet with your advisor. Continuing students are required to pre-register, even if for thesis or research only.
  • Although the subjects you select during pre-registration will populate your initial registration, they are nonbinding. You must confirm your selections during registration.
  • Sloan Course Bidding (Course 15) is open to non-Sloan students during fall and spring pre-registration.
  • First-year students:
    • Spring semester is graded on ABC/NR.
    • Have a 60-unit credit limit plus 6 additional units for Discovery.
    • If you didn’t take a CI in Fall, you must one in Spring. You must make CI-H/HW subject selections before the CI-H/CI-HW deadline: Thursday, January 18 at 5pm. After this date, you may only add yourself to CI-H/HW waitlists.

Fall 2024

Pre-registration for the Fall 2024 semester opens on Wednesday, May 1. Details for the pre-registration process for continuing students will be outlined on the Registrar’s site closer to May. Incoming first-year students can learn more about the Fall 2024 registration process via the Office of the First Year site after May 1.

Checking WebSIS

Remember to verify your registration for accuracy on WebSIS by first week of classes, before your schedule is taken off line. You must report any discrepancies to the Registrar’s Office.
