What is an Associate Advisor?
Associate Advisors are upper-level MIT students in a volunteer leadership position who provide academic support and resources to a group of first-year students.
The Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) matches associate advisors with an UAC or a faculty advisor in a traditional, seminar-based group or a learning community. Associate advisors compliment the advisor’s efforts by providing the student perspective on MIT academics and student life. Associate advisors are highly visible on campus and and serve as role models and support first-year initiatives including programming in their residential communities.
Responsibilities
- Maintain contact with advisor throughout the year and keep them informed about your advisee interactions
- Support the advisor in registration all semesters
- Attend spring and August orientations, and advising meetings during first-year orientation
- Organize social activities with advising group
- Initiate contact with the advisees at least 3 times a semester
Becoming an Associate Advisor
Required dates of participation
- New AA Orientation: Sunday, April 27, 7-8:30PM (Zoom)
- Return AA Orientation: Sunday, April 27 8:30-9:30PM (Zoom)
All Associate Advisors must attend these events on campus:
- August Orientation: Sunday, August 24 [new AAs 9am-1:00pm, returning AAs 10am-1pm]
- Initial Advising Group Meeting: Tuesday, August 26, 1:30pm – 3pm
- Registration meetings: Thursday, August 28

Associate Advisor Council
The Associate Advisor Council is comprised of a small group of enthusiastic and dedicated associate advisors who are integral to the Undergraduate Advising Center’s advising team and share their goal of improving the first-year experience.
Members of this council support the Undergraduate Advising Center by collaboratively providing the student perspective on all aspects of advising first-year students.
Expectations:
- Make a one-year commitment, approximately 10 hours both semesters
- Meet as a committee once per month to brainstorm ideas and provide input
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills
