Academic Support Resources

The following are places you can seek academic support across MIT.

Below are some of the core Academic Support and Tutoring resources offered around MIT. Also be sure to check out Tutoring@MIT for additional information.

Talented Scholars Resource Room (TSR*2) – Room: 16-159

Provides academic support and resources to MIT undergraduate students in a variety of subjects, with a focus on first year General Institute Requirements (GIR’s).

Math Learning Center – Room: 4-159

Here to help students of courses 18.0118.0218.03, and 18.06, as well as upper-level subjects such as 18.100, 18.600, and 18.701

Physics Mentor Program

Provides academic and social support to students enrolled in first- and second-year physics subjects including those taken by all students (8.01, 8.02, and their variations) and those taken primarily by physics majors (8.03, 8.033, 8.04, 8.044, 8.05). The program pairs mentees (students taking one of the designated physics subjects) with mentors who are sophomores or beyond (including graduate students and postdocs) proficient with the physics content and who participate in ongoing training in mentorship skills. Mentees meet with their mentor for 40-60 minutes weekly one-on-one or in small groups, either in person or via Zoom.

Biology Tutoring Program

The department-sponsored tutoring program offers students support for 7.01x subjects, as well as 7.002, 7.003, 7.03, 7.05, and 7.06.

Chemistry – 5.111 Tutoring Program

The department-sponsored tutoring program offers students support for 5.111, one of the Chemistry GIR options.

EECS HKN Tutoring

Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) is the national honor society for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The MIT chapter offers free tutoring services to the entire EECS community — tutoring by Course 6, for Course 6

Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honors Society tutoring – all subjects

Tutoring program matches tutees with tutors based off of their academic experience, and is available free of charge for any course for all undergraduate students.

MIT Libraries

MIT Libraries is here to make information accessible to everyone. Librarians with subject matter expertise are available to help you find information for scholarly work, class projects, or your own research interests. Materials are available both digitally and in-person at several on-campus locations.

Project Manus – MIT Make

Offer a special maker training program for First Years to quickly get you up to speed on the most common tools, get you access to key makerspaces, and get some Makerbucks to spend on supplies. The trainings are run by experienced student mentors and include practice on machines such as laser cutters, 3D printers, drill presses, and bandsaws.

Writing and Communications Center (WCC)

The Writing and Communications Center is open to all MIT undergraduates and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff from all MIT departments and disciplines. Offering individual consultations on oral, visual, and written projects, workshops, Peer-review group for Creative Writing and the Writing Together Online program.

MIT Communications Lab

The Communication Lab is an educational program within the MIT School of Engineering. It helps engineering students learn the technical and professional communication skills they need to achieve their career goals. Lab offers workshops, online articles, and other resources to help trainees build vital skills in written, oral, and visual communication.

UROP Office – Room 5-118

For over 50 years the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program helped MIT undergraduates engage in academic research projects with MIT faculty. Today 93% of undergraduate students will engage in at least one UROP experience during their undergraduate career. The UROP office supports students in finding UROPs and addressing all questions about the UROP experience.

Flipping Failure

Flipping Failure is a collection of stories told by MIT students about their paths toward resilience when faced with challenges at MIT. You can both learn about student challenges and the strategies they used to persevere through those challenges.
